Begin the Process, Job Search Preparation

Searching for a new job, position or career can be intimidating. A successful job search requires effort, organization, planning, setting priorities and scheduling activities. Even before you begin updating your resume, writing cover letters or securing networking appointments, take the time to consider learning ways to make the process of seeking employment as easy and effective as possible.

Job Search Boot Camp

Intensive session for job-searchers. Reflect upon your current employment situation, including your current and past experiences, interests, and most important priorities. Discover career options. Learn effective marketing tools, including how to write résumés and cover letters. Find the hidden and apparent job markets. We will offer tips about how to “wow” the employer at the interview and how to negotiate the best deals for you.

Mock Interview Questions - Group

Interviewing is your real opportunity to present yourself in a positive light to the potential employer. This is your chance to win a job! This workshop prepares you to interview with confidence and increase your chances of getting the job. The class includes group feedback on responses to interview questions, so please be ready to practice with the group!

Open Resume Critique

Your résumé is often an employer’s first impression of you. It is your first opportunity to “market” your skills and background to employers. Learn valuable tips on how to write résumés and cover letters that stand apart from the crowd. Receive feedback on your own materials.

Get Out and Network

Want to take the mystery out of networking? Are you interested in tapping the vast network of unadvertised positions? In this workshop, Participants will learn how to leverage their existing network of contacts and gain valuable skills to help expand that network. This workshop will focus on networking techniques that help you get closer to the community that interests you and the jobs within it.

Take the Social Networking Plunge: LinkedIn

Are you curious about how to develop your professional online presence? Are you looking for tips on how to build your LinkedIn profile and access the contacts and professional opportunities that you need to advance in your career? In this workshop, you will learn effective strategies for using the most popular online networking tool currently available to you: LinkedIn. You’ll also find out how to professionalize your online image so that the next time a hiring manager “Google’s” you, they will like what they see! This course is for people who are comfortable using Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer.

Find A Job: Market Yourself

Companies are not going to hire you just because you have great credentials or because you deserve a job. They are likely to hire you because you fit a need that they have.

So, stop blasting resumes out all over the internet! Instead, take a step back and start thinking of your job search as your own personal marketing campaign.

You have a product – you – that you are trying to sell to a potential buyer – the employer. How are you going to market this product? The answer is simple. You market this product by conveying its benefits: show what benefits you will bring to the employer if you are hired.

Start with a resume. Does your resume currently show how the employer will benefit by hiring you?

In order to know the answer, you need to do some “market research.” Collect job descriptions and look for common themes and “keywords.” From there, contact people who are hiring managers for the same position you are interested in – and just explain you are looking for some insight. Hey, you never know where one of these calls could lead…

Also, research the companies you are targeting by going to their online homepages, and use other resources such as www.Factiva.com and www.Hoovers.com. Professional associations also can be researched in any search engine (such as www.google.com or www.yahoo.com) by simply typing in the word “association” with the word(s) for the profession you are researching.

Once you have done some career research, and you have an idea of how your skills can benefit a company, you will be able to clearly communicate this connection on your resume and, later, in an interview. Use the information to craft a title, objective or summary for your resume, and make sure the common themes and keywords resonate throughout your marketing campaign.

Keep in mind, there’s no guarantee that you will be able to retain your position in a recession, no matter how hard you try. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Update you resume and make sure that you are still networking with old bosses, coworkers and business contacts. Don’t wait until you lose your job, keep your contacts and resume current.

Don't worry, use that nervous energy to step up your passive job search efforts and keep a feel out for possible new opportunities. Even if you don’t end up needing a new job, it’s always a good idea to keep your options open.

The Hilb Scholarship Fund, administered by Jewish Vocational Service in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, recognizes that deciding to continue your education is a big step and that finding ways to pay for your education, especially in today’s economic environment, can be an even bigger hurdle. This fund has become a main source of scholarship assistance to qualified Greater Cincinnati residents. Gus Hilb established the Hilb Scholarship Fund at The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati in 1955 in honor of his parents, Mannis and Yetta Hilb. Federation-appointed trustees determine policies and allocations, and Jewish Vocational Service administers the fund. Yearly grant totals from the Hilb awards have exceeded $180,000 to more than 100 students per academic year.

JVS President Peter Bloch commented, “For high school seniors, college-age students and adults who want additional training, making the grade isn’t enough. The partnership between Jewish Vocational Service and the Hilb Scholarship Fund can help. This Scholarship, which serves middle-class residents of the Greater Cincinnati area, is based on need and academic standing. The Trustees of the Hilb Scholarship Fund define need as total family income which does not exceed $100,000.”

Co-Chairpersons Jerry Klein and Rhoda Mayerson stated, “We’re here to help students get the education and training they need to succeed in the future. By providing an “applicant friendly” process and assisting students on a one-to-one basis, members of our community are better able to attain their goals.”

Students interested in applying for the Hilb Scholarship should keep the deadlines in mind. The last day to submit an application and make an appointment for an interview with the Hilb administrator is March 15, 2009 for the 2009 Summer Term and May 1, 2009 for the 2009-10 Academic Year. You may obtain a copy of the grant application and policy statement by browsing to www.cincinnaticareer.net and looking under the Student Services menu. JVS Cincinnati Career Network – The Jewish Community's Best Kept Secret!

Arriving for the first day of my Workum Internship this summer at Jewish Vocational Service, I really had no idea what to expect. I was excited to learn that I would be working with the Cincinnati Career Network (CCN), a free service available to members of the Jewish Community funded in part by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. I had heard about the Cincinnati Career Network at Mercaz Hebrew High School last year when the Career Consultants led a class on time management. However, I had no idea about all of the extensive services provided by the Career Network.

The Cincinnati Career Network professionals provide personalized help with job searches, tips on resume and cover letter writing and effective networking skills, just to name a few. What makes this program unique is that it provides comprehensive career advice to all kinds of job seekers, including high school students, college graduates, entry level employees, and experienced professionals. The program also connects job seekers to established professionals in the community who volunteer to work with CCN clients in specific fields of interest.

The CCN has evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of Cincinnati’s Jewish unemployed and underemployed. One example is by making it easy for job seekers to connect with a CCN Career Consultant by accessing the newly launched website, www.cincinnaticareer.net . As a native of the Cincinnati Jewish Community I am proud to know that we have this service available, and I will certainly utilize the Cincinnati Career Network after I graduate college.

According to Career Consultant, Kim Slaton, the average American changes jobs ten times and switches careers three times over the course of a lifetime, and the Internet has become the main job-seeking tool. “Looking for a job today is very different than it was looking for one even ten years ago,” points out JVS President and CEO, Peter Bloch. “There’s a lot of competition out there and people need every advantage possible. The experienced CCN Career Consultants help individuals successfully navigate through these job seeking challenges.”

Applications will be availabe for students requesting assistance for second semester/second and third quarter grants, if funds are available, begining in September 2008. The Cincinnati Career Network, CCN, is evolving to help meet the needs of Cincinnati’s Jewish unemployed and underemployed. CCN is pleased to announce a new and enhanced web site designed to better serve the Jewish community. The site is also designed to make it easier to contact CCN Career Resource Consultants, operating out of the offices at Jewish Vocational Service in Blue Ash. Cincinnati Career Network assists people with their career transitions and also helps those looking to grow in their current careers. Services include personalized help with job searches, tips on resume, cover letter writing and effective networking skills. In the coming months, CCN will be introducing new site features including Parnossah Works, an online job search service available exclusively for CCN clients. The JVS Cincinnati Career Network is now online with a redesigned web site to assist you with your career transition and allow you to grow your current career. The new site also includes information about College Services that has been available through Jewish Vocational Service for many years.

The CCN has spent two years of analysis and programming aimed at helping job seekers, career movers and high school & college students. This growth period has allowed us to enhance our services to for those who have career aspirations, in need of a career transition and those looking to expand their current careers.

The Cincinnati Career Network is evolving and growing in many directions to help meet the needs of Cincinnati’s unemployed and underemployed. Our new web site is designed to make contacting a CCN Career Resource Consultant simple and stress-free. In the coming months, we will be introducing new site features and CCN services available exclusively for our clients. We look forward to helping you along your journey!
