Even before you begin updating your résumé, writing cover letters or securing networking appointments, take the time to consider learning ways to make the process of seeking employment as easy and effective as possible.

Job Search Boot Camp

Intensive session for job-searchers. Reflect upon your current employment situation, including your current and past experiences, interests, and most important priorities. Discover career options. Learn effective marketing tools, including how to write résumés and cover letters. Find the hidden and apparent job markets. We will offer tips about how to “wow” the employer at the interview and how to negotiate the best deals for you.

Mock Interview Questions - Group

Interviewing is your real opportunity to present yourself in a positive light to the potential employer. This is your chance to win a job! This workshop prepares you to interview with confidence and increase your chances of getting the job. The class includes group feedback on responses to interview questions, so please be ready to practice with the group!

Open Résumé Critique

Your résumé is often an employer’s first impression of you. It is your first opportunity to “market” your skills and background to employers. Learn valuable tips on how to write résumés and cover letters that stand apart from the crowd. Receive feedback on your own materials.

Get Out and Network

Want to take the mystery out of networking? Are you interested in tapping the vast network of unadvertised positions? In this workshop, participants will learn how to leverage their existing network of contacts and gain valuable skills to help expand that network. This workshop will focus on networking techniques that help you get closer to the community that interests you and the jobs within it.

Social Networking 101

Learn how to begin using social media in your job search. This is a hands-on workshop that will walk you through the steps necessary to create a profile on LinkedIn, how to make connections, how to get recommendations, and how to search for jobs.

LinkedIn & You

This workshop is for people who already have a profile and are using LinkedIn. Explore advanced techniques and upgrade your social networking skills, including how to grow your professional network of contacts, how to be more visible to recruiters, and how to impress prospective employers.

Career Huddles

Join us for discussion groups about various topics that affect your job search. Learn new ways to overcome hurdles and upgrade your materials and techniques. Topics include: Résumés, Interviews, networking, goal-setting, and job search research.

Job Search Boot Camp for College Students to be Offered by Jewish Vocational Service Cincinnati Career Network

Is the prospect of looking for a job after college daunting? Help has arrived!

The Jewish Vocational Service Cincinnati Career Network is conducting a Job Search Boot Camp specifically designed to address the needs of prospective job seekers as they anticipate completing college and moving into the “real world.” The workshop will be held Tuesday, December 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Jewish Vocational Service, 4300 Rossplain Road in Blue Ash. There is no cost to attend (paid for by Jewish Federation of Cincinnati and Jewish Vocational Service) – and food is provided!

The CCN Career Consultants will direct this informative program covering topics such as preparing for a job search using self- and career-assessment instruments; researching specific industries and jobs matching your qualifications and career objectives; accessing jobs in both the “visible” and “hidden” markets; creating résumés, cover letters and other written materials leading to interviews; preparing for job interviews; identifying networking groups for job leads - and support - during your job search. The overall objective? Learn how to LAND THAT JOB!!

At this point, there is no need for another reminder about the difficulty of the time we are living in. Discussion of the recession we currently face permeates throughout all facets of daily life it seems. Few of us have lived during a time when our community has suffered so much. At Jewish Vocational Service, we hear about it every day:

- People who once donated to food pantries are now going to the same food pantries for groceries.
- People who once lived comfortable lives are now losing their homes to foreclosure.
- People who once wore fashionable clothing have had to accept donations of business attire just to look presentable during job interviews.

Many are experiencing these problems for the first time. Some must cobble together several jobs to pay their heating bills or put gas in their car.
It can take more than a year to find a job, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And for young adults, things are even worse. Even before the recession, the 2008 Cincinnati Jewish Community Study reported that nearly 40 percent of Jewish households with people under 45 said they were just managing or could not make ends meet.

Getting help finding a job is important, but the seemingly simple act of acknowledging the need for that assistance can be painful. And the effort to reach out for help is made more difficult by a lack of knowledge about where to turn.

A professional career consultant – someone who can enhance an individual’s job search skills – can be the answer. Yes, it’s important to have impressive work skills and a strong employment history. But here’s something that’s just as important: learning how to write an effective resume and cover letter, sharpening interviewing skills and polishing professional networking techniques.

Many come to Jewish Vocational Service for that help. Our Cincinnati Career Network coaches people in job search skills. We’re committed to helping people rebuild their lives whether they’re unemployed or underemployed, entry-level workers or top executives.

But we’re not the only ones offering such assistance. Other nonprofit and government agencies in Greater Cincinnati that can help are the SuperJob Center in Cincinnati, the Job Search Focus Group in Hyde Park and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Many colleges have career advisors for their students and graduates. In addition, private placement firms provide similar services for a fee. And the United Way of Greater Cincinnati has a telephone referral service (2-1-1) that can help with many needs, including finding a job.

Landing a job can be difficult at any time. But with unemployment soaring, it’s even more difficult now. Seeking professional advice can make a big difference.

Jewish Vocational Service’s Cincinnati Career Network Helps Cincinnatians Succeed in Tough Economic Times

CINCINNATI, OH:--- Like many Cincinnatians struggling to find meaningful employment in an uncertain economy, Andrea Nadel—a recent college graduate who returned home from an internship in Israel several months ago— found few, if any, job prospects. Learning about Jewish Vocational Service’s (JVS) Cincinnati Career Network (CCN), Andrea called, seeking support and guidance from the program—which provides a wide range of networking, professional development, and individual career counseling services designed to help clients succeed in their job searches. “Cincinnati Career Network was a vital resource for me,” says Andrea, who found employment as a Planning Research Associate at the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati with the support of CCN’s staff and programs. “The strategies and tools that I learned have been incredibly helpful, and the dedication of the Career Specialists was crucial in helping me land my current job.”

Recently, volunteers serving on the Jewish Federation’s Planning & Allocations

Committee’s Youth and Family Council made site visits to JVS in order to see first hand how CCN is meeting this critical community need. Council members Susan Brenner, Judy Schaengold, Dr. Judith Van Ginkel and David Schimberg met with JVS personnel and participated in two workshops as part of their work—which includes making allocation recommendations for the program to the Planning and Allocations Committee.

Dr. Judith Van Ginkel observed that, “The JVS Career Network is meeting an important community need—helping people negotiate a difficult labor market. The JVS staff is dedicated and committed to helping people at all income levels prepare for and find jobs.”

As national employment figures approach record high levels—and local unemployment figures exceed national percentages—CCN has intensified its efforts to help hundreds of community members of all ages, backgrounds and abilities identify desirable employment opportunities. “First and foremost, CCN is about helping the individual do what’s best for them to find a job,” said Barry Wolfson, Program Manager of the Cincinnati Career Network. “Our focus is on serving members of the Jewish community who are out of work or underemployed. This also serves the Jewish community by helping its members stay in Cincinnati, and either remain as— or become —contributors to community.”

Following the site visit, Youth and Family Council member David Schimberg said he was impressed with the work of CCN. “JVS’ Career network provides a critically important service to people in our community who are in a tough spot in their lives.”

Nearly 100 members of the community have committed themselves to experiencing first-hand the programs and initiatives for which the community’s agencies are requesting funding. It is believed that this deeper level of engagement—which will include input from clients as well as staff—will result in more insightful recommendations to the Planning and Allocations Committee and more efficient distribution of the Jewish Federation’s available funds.

The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati brings our community together to care for Jews in Cincinnati, in Israel, and around the world, and develops opportunities for each of us to embrace a Jewish life.

JOB SEEKERS GET A COMPETITIVE EDGE WITH THE HELP OF CINCINNATI CAREER NETWORK

As he looked for a job in Greater Cincinnati, Brian Monk tried online job listings. Then, he used a headhunter. Neither approach worked.

But after contacting the Cincinnati Career Network, he landed a job.

“Working with Cincinnati Career Network certainly became a turning point in my job search,” he says.

Now Monk, 36, is director of operations for the Mayerson Jewish Community Center in Amberley Village, Ohio

And he recommends the Career Network, a program of Jewish Vocational Service of Cincinnati. “They gave me the one-on-one attention I needed and helped me tailor a strategy,” he says.

The Career Network, based in Blue Ash, Ohio advises and supports people looking for a job. Its two consultants help clients polish their resumes and cover letters, improve their ability to handle interviews, become more effective in networking and negotiate salaries.

The services, funded by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati and JVS, are available to anyone in Greater Cincinnati. Clients range from top-level executives to minimum wage employees. The consultants also work with people seeking part time, temporary and summer jobs.

To help job seekers make contact with employers, the Career Network maintains an advisory committee, which provides advice to the Career Network and one-on-one guidance to clients. It also has a network of employers. And it partners with other community organizations to provide additional resources to its clients.

“We help people move from where they are to a better place,” says Barry Wolfson, the Career Network’s manager. “Today, that may take a little longer than usual. But with the support and guidance of our consultants, our clients are making progress in moving toward their employment goals.”

Because of the recession, the consultants, Kim Slaton and Bridget Barzman, are in more demand than ever. Their caseloads have more than doubled in two years to almost 200 clients.

To deal with the increasing caseload, the Career Network has added workshops, allowing the consultants to work with clients in small groups, in addition to the traditional one-on-one sessions.

Monk initially worked long distance with Barzman, using email and the telephone. He and his wife, Molli, had decided to move from Atlanta to the Cincinnati area to be closer to her family.

Barzman oriented him to the style of the Cincinnati area business community, a more personal style than what he had found in Atlanta. For instance, she suggested he write handwritten thank you notes after job interviews.

“I could see that she didn’t see me as a case file. She treated me as a person with a unique skill set and background,” Monk says. “And she treated me with compassion, dignity and caring.”

Monk is thankful not only to Barzman, Slaton and the Career Network but also the Jewish Federation for its career guidance.

Career Network client Batya Boxt, 31, of Finneytown, appreciated that Barzman got to know her. “They really do listen to what you need and what you’d be good for.”

Now, Boxt is an administrative assistant in the institutional advancement office at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

Thanks to Barzman, George Dellal, 27, began to understand the importance of networking, including using social media such as Linked In and Twitter.

Dellal, who was living in England before moving to Cincinnati, didn’t know anyone in Ohio. So based on Barzman’s advice, he tapped the networking contacts of his wife, Elana, a rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College.

By doing mock interviews at the Career Network, he anticipated interview questions. He ended up doing eight hours of interviews for a job at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Now, he’s a project manager there.

Slaton helped Stephanie Markowitz, 22, fill out an application for graduate school at Ohio State, and the university admitted her.

Now, Slaton is advising Markowitz how to find a teaching job in middle childhood education. “She’s definitely dedicated to what she’s doing,” Markowitz says.

As Micah Kamesar started looking for a job, he thought he had a well-written resume and cover letter and knew how to conduct a job search.

Then Slaton coached him, and he realized he had a lot more to learn. With Slaton’s assistance, he became more comfortable during interviews and learned how to find the “hidden” job market.

“She helped me realize how many more opportunities you have if you start networking,” Kamesar says.

Kamesar, 23, found a job working as a customer service representative for Touchstone Group Associates, a Blue Ash marketing company.

And Kamesar recommends the Career Network to friends. “It just gets you on the right path,” he says.

70th Anniversary Celebration

Jewish Vocational Service will be celebrating two milestones on Thursday, May 6th: the organization’s 70th anniversary and the re-dedication of its Blue Ash building.

The community is invited for a daylong series of events. A re-dedication program, including a ribbon cutting, will be held at noon. An open house, tours and refreshments will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At 7 p.m., JVS and its Cincinnati Career Network will have a dessert reception and networking, then welcoming and anniversary remarks. At 8 p.m., JVS will present social media expert Michael Loban, co-founder and chief marketing officer of InfoTrust, a social media marketing firm. He will explain how to use social media for networking – to not only land a great job but also how to be more effective in that job.

"For 70 years, JVS has made a difference in people’s lives,” said Peter Bloch, JVS Chief Executive Officer and President. “JVS has helped thousands of people. Now, it’s time to thank the community for supporting us.”

Find A Job: Market Yourself

Companies are not going to hire you just because you have great credentials or because you deserve a job. They are likely to hire you because you fit a need that they have.

So, stop blasting resumes out all over the internet! Instead, take a step back and start thinking of your job search as your own personal marketing campaign.

You have a product – you – that you are trying to sell to a potential buyer – the employer. How are you going to market this product? The answer is simple. You market this product by conveying its benefits: show what benefits you will bring to the employer if you are hired.

Start with a resume. Does your resume currently show how the employer will benefit by hiring you?

In order to know the answer, you need to do some “market research.” Collect job descriptions and look for common themes and “keywords.” From there, contact people who are hiring managers for the same position you are interested in – and just explain you are looking for some insight. Hey, you never know where one of these calls could lead…

Also, research the companies you are targeting by going to their online homepages, and use other resources such as www.Factiva.com and www.Hoovers.com. Professional associations also can be researched in any search engine (such as www.google.com or www.yahoo.com) by simply typing in the word “association” with the word(s) for the profession you are researching.

Once you have done some career research, and you have an idea of how your skills can benefit a company, you will be able to clearly communicate this connection on your resume and, later, in an interview. Use the information to craft a title, objective or summary for your resume, and make sure the common themes and keywords resonate throughout your marketing campaign.

Keep in mind, there’s no guarantee that you will be able to retain your position in a recession, no matter how hard you try. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Update you resume and make sure that you are still networking with old bosses, coworkers and business contacts. Don’t wait until you lose your job, keep your contacts and resume current.

Don't worry, use that nervous energy to step up your passive job search efforts and keep a feel out for possible new opportunities. Even if you don’t end up needing a new job, it’s always a good idea to keep your options open.

Job Search Boot Camp
Intensive session covering for job-searchers. Reflect upon your current employment situation, including your current and past experiences, interests, and most important priorities. Discover career options. Learn effective marketing tools, including how to write résumés and cover letters. Find the hidden and apparent job markets. We will offer tips about how to “wow” the employer at the interview and how to negotiate the best deals for you.

Job Searching
Are you confused about how to begin your job search? This workshop will help you get started. Or are you burnt out and need some new ideas about how to find job leads? Learn some fresh approaches to finding job leads in this course where we will examine several effective methods for uncovering both the visible and the hidden job markets.

Interviewing
Interviewing is your real opportunity to present yourself in a positive light to the potential employer. This is your chance to win a job! Learn the strategies of preparing for job interviews, how to organize your thoughts, present yourself as a strong candidate, soften negative events in your work history, and answer difficult questions. The Hilb Scholarship Fund, administered by Jewish Vocational Service in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, recognizes that deciding to continue your education is a big step and that finding ways to pay for your education, especially in today’s economic environment, can be an even bigger hurdle. This fund has become a main source of scholarship assistance to qualified Greater Cincinnati residents. Gus Hilb established the Hilb Scholarship Fund at The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati in 1955 in honor of his parents, Mannis and Yetta Hilb. Federation-appointed trustees determine policies and allocations, and Jewish Vocational Service administers the fund. Yearly grant totals from the Hilb awards have exceeded $180,000 to more than 100 students per academic year.

JVS President Peter Bloch commented, “For high school seniors, college-age students and adults who want additional training, making the grade isn’t enough. The partnership between Jewish Vocational Service and the Hilb Scholarship Fund can help. This Scholarship, which serves middle-class residents of the Greater Cincinnati area, is based on need and academic standing. The Trustees of the Hilb Scholarship Fund define need as total family income which does not exceed $100,000.”

Co-Chairpersons Jerry Klein and Rhoda Mayerson stated, “We’re here to help students get the education and training they need to succeed in the future. By providing an “applicant friendly” process and assisting students on a one-to-one basis, members of our community are better able to attain their goals.”

Students interested in applying for the Hilb Scholarship should keep the deadlines in mind. The last day to submit an application and make an appointment for an interview with the Hilb administrator is March 15, 2009 for the 2009 Summer Term and May 1, 2009 for the 2009-10 Academic Year. JVS Cincinnati Career Network – The Jewish Community's Best Kept Secret!

Arriving for the first day of my Workum Internship this summer at Jewish Vocational Service, I really had no idea what to expect. I was excited to learn that I would be working with the Cincinnati Career Network (CCN), a free service available to members of the Jewish Community funded in part by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. I had heard about the Cincinnati Career Network at Mercaz Hebrew High School last year when the Career Consultants led a class on time management. However, I had no idea about all of the extensive services provided by the Career Network.

The Cincinnati Career Network professionals provide personalized help with job searches, tips on resume and cover letter writing and effective networking skills, just to name a few. What makes this program unique is that it provides comprehensive career advice to all kinds of job seekers, including high school students, college graduates, entry level employees, and experienced professionals. The program also connects job seekers to established professionals in the community who volunteer to work with CCN clients in specific fields of interest.

The CCN has evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of Cincinnati’s Jewish unemployed and underemployed. One example is by making it easy for job seekers to connect with a CCN Career Consultant by accessing the newly launched website, www.cincinnaticareer.net . As a native of the Cincinnati Jewish Community I am proud to know that we have this service available, and I will certainly utilize the Cincinnati Career Network after I graduate college.

According to Career Consultant, Kim Slaton, the average American changes jobs ten times and switches careers three times over the course of a lifetime, and the Internet has become the main job-seeking tool. “Looking for a job today is very different than it was looking for one even ten years ago,” points out JVS President and CEO, Peter Bloch. “There’s a lot of competition out there and people need every advantage possible. The experienced CCN Career Consultants help individuals successfully navigate through these job seeking challenges.”

The CCN has spent two years of analysis and programming aimed at helping job seekers, career movers and high school & college students. This growth period has allowed us to enhance our services to for those who have career aspirations, in need of a career transition and those looking to expand their current careers.
